Today we’re outside enjoying this incredible spring day at an old park with a whole new life. We’re back in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, trying not to lose this flat plastic circle. Just don’t call it a Frisbee.
Welcome to the newly opened 18-hole course at Norris Park – no longer the Rutherfordton Golf Club. The four-letter word of “golf” has now evolved here to include a new four-letter word: “disc golf”.
This is a fantastic setting that really showcases the natural terrain and provides plenty of challenge and fun. In development since 2019, this long-awaited, 45-acre former golf course was re-designed as a public space that honors the past and invests in the future.
Norris Park is open 7 days a week from dawn to dusk. Locals and visitors alike are invited to be good stewards of this historic property and try their hand… wrist… and arm at something fun and different.
The carefully planned disc golf course by Innova Discs is free to play and is suitable for both casual use and some serious competition. Come prepared with your own gear, or stop by the Norris Public Library in Rutherfordton to borrow one of their new disc golf kits.
Yes, you can check a set of discs out at the library. But if a good book and a shady spot in the park is more your speed, good news. There’s more to explore here at Norris Park. You can bring along a well-stocked Ingles picnic basket and head to the beautiful picnic shelter.
When you are ready to get moving again, there are several paths to explore, including a segment of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, a four-state, 330 mile route that traces the path that the “Overmountain” militia travelled on their way to the Battle of Kings Mountain.
Whether you’re marching in the footsteps of America 250, meandering along the lovely paths, or bushwhacking your way towards an errant disc, your time spent at Norris Park is sure to be enjoyable here in this beautiful new community gathering place.
