Lake James was created as a hydroelectric project in the early 1900s. Well-maintained camping facilities include drive-in or hike-in sites, but if you have your own boat, you can really get away from it all by reserving a boat-in campsite.The fishing out here is phenomenal! Smallmouth AND largemouth bass, walleye and crappie thrive in the waters of Lake James. When you are ready to give your pole a rest, head for one of the many hiking and biking trails! There are over 25 miles to explore!

And there’s a certified 2.3 mile section of the Overmountain Victory Trail within Lake James State Park near the Paddy’s Creek Access..

The beach at Lake James is one of the best in the mountains, with lifeguards on duty from May to September. Just don’t forget your sunscreen!
