What is this? Is it a peh-CAHN… a peh-CAN… a PEE-CAN? However you pronounce the name of this little nut, it’s delicious. And today, we’re here at Stuckey’s to learn more about how this road-trip favorite became the iconic brand it is today.
Welcome to Wrens, Georgia. Located about 30 miles southwest of Augusta, this is pecan country. Harvested from majestic trees, the pecan is a southern favorite. And here at Stuckey’s it has quite the history.
With a $35 loan, WS “Sylvester” Stuckey, Sr. founded Stuckey’s as a roadside pecan stand in Eastman, Georgia in 1937. Then things really took off. In its heyday Stuckey’s was the oasis of the great American road trip, with more than 360 stores in over 40 states. And today, you can find their delicious snacks at your local Ingles.
And they all originate here. This is where the magic happens. We were able to get a tour from 3rd generation co-owner Stephanie Stuckey. Here they make a variety of pecan flavors, including roasted and salted, honey roasted, kettle glazed, chocolate pecans (milk, white, and dark), cinnamon pecans, sweet and salty pecans, and of course the iconic pecan log roll.
As they like to say here, this is more than a factory. This is a place that’s keeping tradition alive and well. The tours are fun and interesting – and educational! Did you know Georgia grows more pecans than anywhere else in the world? Or that pecans are the only snack nut native to the US? Well, now you do.
And in addition to the tours you can also cruise through the gift shop for those oh-so-important souvenirs, and get a look at some great Stuckey’s memorabilia.
So head on down to Wrens, Georgia. And on your way, pop into your local Ingles for that perfect snack for the all American road trip.
