Today we’re making a return to a historical destination that we first visited 3 years ago. Why you may ask? Well, some big changes have happened here in this little museum. And today we’re here to find out what’s new as we explore our past at the Veterans History Museum of the Carolinas.
Located in the heart of one of our favorite mountain towns, Brevard, North Carolina, the Veterans History Museum of the Carolinas has been welcoming and educating visitors for nearly a decade. The mission: to honor the men and women from North and South Carolina who served in our armed forces.
One of the fascinating exhibits here has been recently updated to tell the story of the 6888. Recently featured in the motion picture of the same name, here we learn the story of the Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black female unit in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) during World War II.
Another large addition comes in the form of their recent partnership with Patriots Point Naval Museum in Charleston SC. It’s making a big impact – literally. Out front we find the 7-foot tall submarine anchor. And inside we find a locker set and three bunk beds from the USS Yorktown.
Not to be outdone by the Navy, Air Force and Army Air Corps veterans now have their own exhibit room, featuring parts from various aircraft including oxygen bottles from a B-17, flight helmets, and flight suits.
And for a look at the military in miniature, the model room is really fun to explore. Here you can find dozens of models of various combat craft down through the decades. Including tanks, aircraft, and dioramas.
And for the kiddos that come along there is a selfie station here where you can dress up in a variety of uniforms for that special photo souvenir.
Every room here at the museum has something new to showcase. So, if you’ve been here before – it’s time to come back. And if you’ve never visited… what are you waiting for? The Veterans History Museum of the Carolinas has something for everyone.
