Today we’re exploring one of the most artistic buildings in one of the most artistic cities in one of the most artistic regions in the country. We’re in Asheville. And this is the Asheville Art Museum.

Founded in 1948 the Asheville Art Museum moved around a bit growing up. It was born on Charlotte Street, lived in Montford for a while, spent a bit of time at the Civic Center, and finally landed here on Pack Square… Where in 2019 their gorgeous expansion and renovation combined old and new spaces for a bright, airy, cathedral of a museum – and all that goes with it.

You see, the Asheville Art Museum isn’t just a place to experience meaningful works of art (and it is a place to experience meaningful works of art). It’s also classes, performances, excursions, and so much more. And of course it’s got a fantastic cafe.

This might be the best hidden gem in Asheville – and that’s saying something. As you take the elevator all the way to the top you emerge in Perspective Cafe – a glorious rooftop venue and sculpture garden that reminds me of those great museum cafes in London and Paris.

And you’re gonna want some fuel for your exploration, because this museum is 4 floors of art just waiting for your gaze to rest upon their thought-provoking forms. How’s that for artistic?

There are multiple permanent exhibits here, including Intersections in American Art and Many Become One. And at any given time there are at least 5 rotating exhibitions that span works like American Impressionism, Southern Appalachian Craft, and artwork from the renowned Black Mountain College.

And folks, this is a great museum. It’s beautiful. The architecture and flow of the space itself is a joy. And the works on display here will make you think, wonder, and admire.
