Today we’re taking a trip back in time as we visit one of the truly significant historical destinations in the Upstate of South Carolina. From Pre-History to the Native Cherokee to the earliest pioneers, this unique site has attracted humankind for millenia.

This is Hagood Mill. Located in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this place got its start as a mill in 1793. And the mill itself and the surrounding property is an amazing portal into our past, ready for exploration.

The mill that still stands today was built around 1845. The wooden water wheel is 20 feet in diameter, 4 feet wide, and produces 22 horsepower that can still grind grain to this day.

In addition to the mill building itself, there’s the Hagood Cabin & Murphree-Hollingsworth Cabin… Burdine Lodge… Dodgens General Store… and the Blacksmith Shop, Woodworking Shop, and Moonshine Still.

One of the really cool things about Hagood Mill is that history is alive and well. You can take classes in blacksmithing, hearth cooking, Native American plant medicine, and several other really interesting practices from days gone by.

Another incredible site here at Hagood Mill is South Carolina’s only petroglyph site that’s open to the public. It’s housed in a specially designed pavilion to preserve and showcase these remarkable artifacts. They also feature interpretive displays to learn about their historical and cultural significance.

This site has been a destination for people from miles around for thousands of years. Commercial production at the mill continued until 1966. And today, Hagood Mill tells the stories maintains the traditions of those bygone days.

From ancient and prehistoric images… to our pioneer past… to the present day preserving the heritage of the Upstate, Hagood Mill is a destination not to be missed.
