We visited the North Carolina Arboretum on the very first episode of the Ingles Open Road. We returned a couple years later to experience their Winter Lights. And today we’re back… in search of trolls.
Yes, trolls. That’s because this winter the Arboretum is playing host to a very special art installation that has already traveled the world. The trolls have circumnavigated the globe – and now their exploration brings them to Asheville.
These oversized whimsical works of art are the creations of Danish artist Thomas Dambo. These interactive troll sculptures are exploring the Arboretum, embarking on a curious journey to learn about humankind.
Standing seven to nine feet tall and lovingly described by the artist as “Baby Trolls”, the creatures are crafted from materials like fallen branches, wooden pallets and twigs. Through their observations, the trolls reveal a fresh perspective on what makes us human, sparking curiosity and laughter in visitors of all ages.
In total there are 12 trolls scattered throughout the grounds – from the gardens to the trails. As you walk around interacting with these woodland creatures, you can’t help but smile. And as your journey takes you from one tremendous troll to the next, the winter beauty of the Arboretum is on full display.
And what a great destination for this exhibition. Thomas Dambo’s trolls have been seen around the world, from Denmark to South Korea, to Chile to Australia. There’s no better place for these trolls to explore than the North Carolina Arboretum.
That’s because this is such a wild, wonderful, and accessible destination that’s really available to all.
